I maintain servers and enterprise applications from an infrastructure perspective. I'm involved in upgrading two of those enterprise applications at once and I'm on a tight dead line :(
the faux-hawk style and aDoctor QMar 10, 01:04 AMI'm imagining a scenario like this and wonder if it's technically doable and if it's a reasonable approach. Note that I'm a web programmer but not an iOS programmer.
A 12-person team is out in the woods on a scientific scavenger hunt for bugs. They stay in wifi range of a Mac that's running a web server with a web app I'll write. Each person has an iPad or iPhone running mobile Safari.
When one scavenger spots a gromphadorhina portentosa, he/she types its name in a web form and submits it. (Maybe we'll use abbreviations for the names!) The web app checks if a gromphadorhina portentosa has already been spotted and recorded, letting that person know. If it hasn't been spotted before, the scavenger takes a photo and collects other scientific information about the bug, which can stay on the local device until later. The purpose of the central web server is to prevent two scavengers from taking the time to record details about the same bug.
Optimizations could include using AJAX to check for matches as the user types.
Is this a practical way to do approach this problem? Are there smarter approaches I should also consider?

» Faux hawk hairstylesAppleScruff1May 7, 02:53 AMI thought about the Air, especially considering I'll be buying an SSD to replace the HDD in the MBP, however the 4GB of RAM and the older Core 2 Duo processors kinda scared me away. Now if the MBA has a refresh before we get back in July I'll definitely look into it...
As was your +1 for the $1199 13" or $1499 13"

The updated Air may be available around the time you get back home, so that might be an option to consider.
And thank you for serving. It is appreciated and I wish you a safe trip back home.
David beckham hairstylesMisterMeMar 4, 09:44 PMThanks for responding so quickly. No, no chance of a different document. It is a very unique magazine. I have been working on this mag since last Monday - and have opened and closed it countless times. This is really STRANGE.
I'm not using backup software. I just use the 2nd hard drive to "double back up" in case. I do this at least once a day - or if I have done major changes to a job
With the permissions thing - I did a "file info" in another totally different job folder and went to details and changed the "group" access to "read and write" (cause it wasn't letting me save things in that folder even though me being the owner it said "read and write).
I am not on a network or anything - just a stand-alone osx 10.3.3
Have done a check and it doesn't seem to have affected anything elseFiles don't just suddenly revert to previous versions. It would appear that you last edited the file in your "double back up," that your back up file replaced your working file, or that you did not save your latest work.

The first faux hawk hairstyleHellhammerApr 25, 08:23 AMI found this interesting:
Notebook Owners
Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your replacement coverage for a defective battery to three years from the date of your notebook purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan. However, the AppleCare Protection Plan for notebook computers does not cover batteries that have failed or are exhibiting diminished capacity except when the failure or diminished capacity is the result of a manufacturing defect. Apple offers a battery replacement service for MacBook Air and all MacBook Pro notebooks with built-in batteries. You can purchase replacement batteries for late models of Apple notebooks directly from the Apple Store.
So what constitutes defective. Is there are criteria for measuring this that is disclosed or it it up to the repair tech?
The way I view this is that it essentially means 99.99% of the time the battery is not covered.
http://www.interrupt19.com/2009/02/09/apple-laptop-battery-defective/
That article provides some insight. In general, it has to be clearly defective before Apple will replace it. For current Macs it is 1000 cycles until it should drop below 80% but of course, Apple won't replace it if it has 999 cycles and it is at 79%.

awesome! thanks.
I knew there had to be a way and I was at my wit's end b/c I couldn't make it work.
I do appreciate it and I'll make sure to credit you in helping me when I explain to the client. As much as I wanted to do it myself, I just had to ask b/c this photo deserves to be fixed properly :)

The Faux Hawk HaircutReach9Mar 21, 12:11 AMHey guys,
First of all, great website!
I was wondering if we could get an iOS forum as well, since there's one for Mac OS X, and none specifically for iOS (unless i'm blind). It seems that a lot of people are talking about iOS updates in the iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch forums.
What do you guys think?
Very pretty FauxhawkDeaconGravesMay 4, 10:52 PMTry resetting the PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
6. Release the keys.
On a side note. You should never install a developer preview as your primary OS.

Blondie :)Apr 23, 06:47 PMI'm sure that you can get it repaired at the apple store in New York City. It shouldn't take them too long either. However, since your MacBook model is a decent amount older than most, I would call them up before you head to U.S.A. and have them order the parts directly to the store. From there they should be able to get you fixed up and on your way :) I don't know about cost though...you'll have to ask apple.
Cheers!
tech4allSep 17, 06:54 PMMy wife and I are going to San Francisco in November. I thinking about taking the BART from SFO to downtown. Mainly I would avoid the hassle of driving downtown plus I would save on rental car costs and parking costs. Once we get downtown we won't really need a car.
How do people feel about BART?
Is it safe and reliable?
First off read this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=149771) (first post). I personally have never seen that happen, but I feel you should be aware of that.
In my experience BART is fairly safe. Just don't leave things unattended; keep them under control at all times. Like always have your bag on your lap and a strap or something looping your arm just incase. I've taken my iPod on BART before and never had a problem; although I was a bit nervous at times. Since your only going from SFO to downtown SF it won't take that long to get there. Just got to be alert and just use common sense with certain things.
As far as reliability is concerned - well for the most part they're usually on time. But there have been occasions (more than once) were they were delayed, and that can be bad especially during the evening commute home when you want to get home.
But all in all, it's safe. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just use common sense: don't show anything valuable, keep that stuff in a pocket or bag. And just be alert in general. I mean I've even taken naps on BART and never really had a problem. And BART does have it's own police unit.
Hope that all makes sense. If not post back :)
